Mount Olympus (Ascent)

The region of Elassona extends along the southwestern side of Mount Olympus. A relatively short ascent route to Mytikas, the highest summit of the legendary mountain, is described below.

Ascent to Mytikas

Route: Elassona – Kalyvia (Olympus) – Christakis Refuge – Kakoskala – Mytikas

By road from Elassona we head toward the Elassona–Kozani National Road. After approximately 8.5 km we reach the village of Mikro Eleftherochori, where we change direction toward the Elassona–Katerini National Road.

After 5.5 km we arrive at the village of Kallithea (Elassona); there we turn right and follow the signs leading to the village of Kalyvia (Olympus), located 7 km further ahead.

From Kalyvia (Olympus), we follow the provincial road, which eventually becomes an unpaved track, leading to the Christakis area, where the emergency refuge is located. A 4×4 vehicle may be required, and the journey typically takes about 60 minutes.

After reaching the Christakis Refuge, we ascend the trail toward the Scholeio area. This segment takes approximately 45 minutes. The route up to Kakoskala is easy and one of the fastest paths for ascending Mytikas.

From Kakoskala, however, the ascent to Mytikas is quite challenging. It takes approximately 45 minutes and requires a guide and specialized climbing equipment.
